[Did You Know] That We Don't Just Sell Residential Floors?

I have often had people ask, "Oh, so do you do carpet or hardwood?"

To which I typically grin and reply, "Yes!  We both sell, install, and refurbish carpet, hardwood, anything that pretends to be a floor.  Plus, if you can dream it regarding tile, we can do it.  And, we also have counter tops, stair treads, and railings!"

That is actually why we tweaked our name from Mercer Carpet One Floor and Home to Mercer Floor and Home of Carpet One.  It helped the above conversation a bit.

Though, it doesn't help people know that we are not limited to just residential flooring options we also work with businesses, non-profits, and governmental organizations to make sure that the foundation of their interiors is lasting, efficient, and stylish.  In fact, we have worked with Random House of Westminster, Maryland and Carroll County Community College among others.  And we love to work with fellow local, family businesses!

[Did You Know?] That You Need to Have Your Carpets Professionally Cleaned Every 18-24 Months?

Yup, it's true.  Why?  Because the hot water extraction method is necessary to maintain both your stain and your texture retention warranties on all carpets!

How does it work?  The hot water extraction method basically resets the carpet's 'perm' or the twist of the fiber tufts.

And, of course, it is a much deeper clean to help get rid of any stubborn stains and they greying that occurs in high traffic areas.

We suggest you check out Carroll County Carpet Cleaning Inc.  They're also a family business and we've been working with them for years.  They do excellent work and don't try to sell you the additional stain protection treatments (which are completely unnecessary for most carpets).

Have Fun,

[Decorating Ideas] Adding Texture: Burlap

Thank you Brooke of Velvet and Linen Home Design Blog for a great, inspirational picture!
I've been really interested in using burlap (also known as hessian) in home design for a while now.  It is a great texture that adds a lot of visual interest without being in your face.  Plus, it is sustainable because it's made from renewable plant fibers and can often be recycled!

But what inspired me to write this post about it was the picture that I found at Velvet and Linen, one of the home design blogs I enjoy.  I've seen burlap used to upholster furniture and as throw pillows.  I've seen people frame old coffee bags and use it as wall art.  But to use it as wallpaper?  Such a cool idea!  (The post with the picture also had a picture showing burlap curtains!)

Here's another picture of burlap curtains!
First of all, why is adding texture to a design so important.  Well, there's a reason that designers consider texture to be at least as important as color when it comes to design.  It is a subtle way off adding lots of visual interest and adjusting the feel of a room.

There is hardly any color in this room, but the texture of the fireplace really adds a lot to the design

When it comes to how texture can adjust the atmosphere of a room, the simple rule is that the 'rougher' textures are more casual than the 'smoother' textures.  This is not always the case, and often people mix textures to create a feel that is both dressy and comfortable.

This is a very dressy room, but it is also wellcoming because of the varying textures.

For example: look at your dining room table vs. your kitchen table (or the eat at counter).  Your dinning room table is probably a bit smoother than the counter or table in your kitchen.  That is because the functions are different.  A dinning room is supposed to be at least slightly more formal than the kitchen.  It's where you host the special dinners.  While the kitchen is where you grab a quick breakfast or have a casual family lunch.

Burlap has a sophisticated, natural look that can really help a formal looking room feel more comfortable, welcoming because of it's more casual, rougher texture.

I am using burlap to reupholster my couch because my living room needed a more natural but sophisticated feel. (I'll be sure to post a picture when it's all done!)  Here are some other ideas of what you can do with burlap (including some great ways to be crafty if you are so inclined!)

Maybe a good project for the children

Here is an example of the wall art using bags of cocoa beans like I mentioned before!

Burlap is a great way to add some industrial modern style to any space
The texture and colors of burlap goes great with quite a few styles: sophisticated/natural, industrial/modern, shabby chic, urban country, and more.

Oh! Check out the wallpaper here: did they use papryus? Ugh, my head is now spinning with ideas!
Another nice thing about burlap is that you can use it as little or as much as possible.

Toss some over an old tired table!

And you don't necessarily have to be the crafty type either!

Now that takes patience/skill
Or, if you want, you can make a big statement and create a conversation piece.

Plus, why note use the leftovers to jazz up gifts!

Here is a video with more ideas!

You can also get burlap by the yard at your local fabric store! (I got mine from Joanne's off of Rt. 140 in Westminster, MD.)

What kind of ideas are you rolling around in your head?  Do you think that burlap can help add a little something to a space in your home?  I'd love to hear your thoughts!

[In the News] Sea Change - A Whole New Meaning to Oceanfront Property

Have you seen the October issue of the Baltimore Magazine?  Did you see the article 'Sea Change'?  Great story, right?  (No, worries if you didn't.  The only reason I heard of it was because Dad, Jim Farrell, donated the carpet and pad for the project).

I'm not sure I'd be able to live like the Munds family, but it sure is interesting to think about.  Here's the link to the online version of the article! I'd love to know what you think!

[Community] Welcome a Cure 2011

It's that time of year again: the time of the year where the world turns pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

This is when we hear the slogans like Save the Tatas and Think Pink on a frequent and regular basis.  And this is a community effort that is close to the hearts of the entire Mercer Team.  My father had a scare with cancer while I was in college; thankfully, the doctors caught it early enough.  But even that small scare ripped the ground out from beneath my feet; I can only imagine what people have to go through for the larger scares.

I truly believe that if we can find a cure for one type of cancer, we won't be far from finding the cures for all types.  So, Mercers supports the cause all year round, but this is when Carpet One International releases the new styles for the year.  So I thought I'd show them all off to you.

These mats...
  • Are great gift ideas
  • Can be used both indoors and outdoors
  • Protect your floors
  • Add warmth to the floor outside your tub and/or shower
  • Add cushion at the kitchen sink
  • Are not sold for profit, 100% of the proceeds goes to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (who's administrative expenses are less than 10% off donations)
  • Are available NOW at your local Mercer Floor and Home Showroom
If any of these catch your eye, send me an email telling me when you'll be able to stop by to pick one up and I'll hold it for you as inventory is limited!  But don't worry, if your favorite style runs out we can order in more!

You can also help by donating directly to BCRF:

P.S. - Plus, for a limited time only; if you upgrade to the SmartCushion pad for your new carpet; both Mercers and Mohawk will donate a large portion of the proceeds to Susan G. Komen!

[Did You Know?] That the Mercer Team is Your Negotiator?

I have spoken with a few people recently who said that warranties do not matter to them because, in their experience, no one stands behind them and they get the run around.

That made me sad and a little angry; not at them, but at the people that didn't back up their promises.  I know that sometimes, since I've grown up learning how the Mercer Team works, it often is a surprise to me when how others fail to meet those standards.  But what happened to going above and beyond?  Standing by your customers?

Have we gotten too used to detached corporates to remember how small, local businesses stand by their clients because 1) their clients are also their neighbors and 2) it's the right thing to do?

So that tiny rant leads me to today's 'Did You Know' topic: when you are a client of Mercers and something goes wrong, we act as your negotiator.  We are the ones that stand behind our warranties and guarantees.  We don't care if the warranty applies to our work or the manufacturer's, or anyone elses's for that matter; we want to do our absolute best to help you fix whatever issue came up.

My mom, Brooke, tells me a story about when she was pregnant with me.  The company my father was working for (before my grandfather hired him) withheld his commission check because he stretched the rules to help a customer.  My parents were newly weds and had me on the way; they couldn't afford to go without that check.

But what could they do?  So Mom called her father, John Mercer, for ideas.  And he said this: If you are going to make a wave, make it a tsunami.  Then he told her to get her VERY pregnant self over to Dad's office and tell every sales person there what was going on.  If there is one rule about working with sales people, it's that you don't mess with their commission.  Long story short, Dad got his check.

That lesson is what helps my parents make sure that 3rd party warranties are backed up.  With our buying power, it is much easier for us to make a tsunami wave to get things done right than if a single person did.  Thankfully, we try to only work with companies and people who do stand behind their promises, so we don't have to use that wave very often.

So, that's basically the end of a longer than usual Saturday post.  I hope it wasn't too lengthy and that you enjoyed my little antidote.  Hopefully, the next time you see me write about warranties, you'll keep this in mind and know that they mean something with us.

Have a Great Weekend!
